Project Initiation and Fundings: The Training of Community Midwife Assistants project commenced with substantial funding from the DRC Diaspora Projects, notably the DIPS project. Implemented by KRDO Somalia (Kaah Relief & Development Organization) in collaboration with QRO (Qaw Relief Organization), the project aimed to effectively reduce maternal mortality rates in Somalia.
Focus Areas of Training: The initiative concentrated on comprehensive training modules encompassing crucial areas such as Delivery Assistance, Counseling, Prevention of Pregnancy Complications (e.g., Anemia and bleeding), Hygiene Promotion, and the administration of the TT Vaccine. These focused on assisting vulnerable communities in hard-to-reach areas with limited healthcare access.
Beneficiary Selection and Collaborative Efforts: Beneficiary selection was a collaborative effort involving the Bari Regional Ministry of Health and the local community. The identification of beneficiaries at the district level was based on specific criteria tailored to the project’s objectives, with support from the Ministry.
Curriculum and Training Execution: The training program strictly adhered to the approved curriculum of the Puntland Ministry of Health. It emphasized the acquisition of midwife assistant skills and was conducted in the trainees’ native language, Somali, ensuring effective comprehension and learning.
Training Sessions and Future Preparation: Throughout the year-long project duration, trainees, primarily girls, participated in rigorous six-day training sessions per week. Anticipating completion by January 2024, the Puntland Ministry of Health pledged to equip the graduates with essential tools aligned with their acquired skills. This commitment aims to ensure their readiness to significantly contribute to enhancing maternal and child healthcare services in Somalia.
